I think you bring up a good point about convincing kids that we are never giving up on them. I immediately thought of Freedom Writers which I know we have talked about before. I think the reason that teacher was so able to reach the kids was she showed them that she respected them and that she was not going to give up on them. They knew she loved them and they responded to that love which showed them that they had what it takes to be more than they thought they could be. I think that is at the heart of the matter. Outside motivation with stickers, treasure boxes are great if all kids are rewarded equally and the teacher is consistent. There is no doubt kids like them! The difficulty in any management system will always lie with developing intrinsic motivation so the important thing is to find the balance which you speak of.

I also enjoyed hearing other ideas as well.  I also use the sticker charts, awards, and treasure box in my classroom.  I also seem to find balance between comfort and community along with a discipline plan.  Our administrators actually ask for our discipline plan so it is like they are expecting an actual plan.  One idea I like from our schoolwide discipline program is the concept of 4:1 positive comment ratio.  Using 4 positive comments to 1 negative comment in the classroom--it makes a difference which I would hope we all know. :)

Repetitive calendar--I know what you mean --the need to change it up is so important too :)</description>
